Black History Month is a time to honor the past, celebrate the present, and build the future. It’s about recognizing the resilience, creativity, and contributions of Black individuals in every industry—including the culinary world. As a Black business owner in 2025, I reflect on the journey that led me here, the history that shaped me, and the future I’m working to create with Uncle Jammy’s.
From Family Kitchens to Building a Brand
My story begins in the kitchens of my childhood, where my mother from Baton Rouge and my father from the Virgin Islands filled our home with bold flavors and warm memories. Food wasn’t just about sustenance—it was an experience, a gathering, a way of life. I grew up watching my parents and grandparents work their magic, absorbing every lesson, every technique, and every spice they used to transform simple ingredients into something extraordinary.
That early inspiration led to a lifelong obsession with flavor experimentation. From setting off a few kitchen fires in my youth to crafting my first legendary sauce—Area 51, featuring Avocado, Jalapeños, and Tequila—my culinary path was never ordinary. My time at Red Lobster, Quaker Steak & Lube, and late nights at the stove, mixing and tasting, were all stepping stones to building Uncle Jammy’s into a brand that speaks for itself.
What It Means to Be a Black Business Owner in 2025
The landscape for Black entrepreneurs has evolved, but challenges remain. Access to capital, distribution opportunities, and visibility are still hurdles for many Black-owned food brands. Yet, resilience, innovation, and a deep connection to culture continue to drive our success. Owning a business today isn’t just about making great products—it’s about telling a story, creating opportunities, and ensuring our voices are heard in an industry that hasn’t always welcomed us.
At Uncle Jammy’s, I’m proud to contribute to the legacy of Black-owned BBQ sauce and seasoning brands that bring something unique to the table—literally. I honor the traditions of Southern BBQ, Caribbean spice blends, and Creole seasoning while forging my own path with unexpected and unforgettable flavors.
Supporting Black-Owned Food Brands
This Black History Month, I encourage everyone to be intentional about supporting Black-owned food businesses. Whether it’s choosing a Black-owned BBQ sauce, following a Black chef on social media, or sharing your favorite small-batch Black-owned products with friends, every action helps amplify our presence.
If you're looking for where to buy Black-owned seasonings and sauces, Uncle Jammy’s is available nationwide. Whether you’re grilling, roasting, or just looking to spice up your meals, our handcrafted BBQ Sauces, hot sauces, and gourmet seasonings deliver the perfect balance of heat, smoke, and sweetness.
The Future of Flavor
Uncle Jammy’s isn’t just about sauce—it’s about building a legacy, creating jobs, and inspiring the next generation of Black entrepreneurs. Food is history. Food is culture. Food is power. As I continue to grow this brand, I do so with the same spirit that has fueled Black innovators for generations—passion, persistence, and an unshakable belief in what’s possible.
This Black History Month, let’s celebrate the flavors, the stories, and the businesses that make our community stronger. Let’s honor the past while creating something bold and new for the future.
Stay hungry. Stay inspired. And as always, keep it saucy.
