Ingredients

  • 1 lb dry navy beans (or 4 cups canned beans, drained and rinsed)

  •  2 tbsp olive oil for a vegetarian version)

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1/2 cup tomato paste

  • 1/3 cup cider vinegar + 2 Tbsp Cider vinegar

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp paprika

  • 1/3 cup molasses

  • 2 tbsp yellow mustard (or Dijon)

  • 1/4 cup Uncle Jammy’s BBQ Sauce (choose your favorite flavor!)

  • 2 tsp Uncle Jammy’s Gold Dust Seasoning (instead of black pepper)

  • 1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)

  • 1 cup chicken broth (or vegetable broth for vegetarian)

Preparation

Step 1

Prepare the beans (if using dry beans):

Soak the beans overnight in water. Rinse and drain.

Add the beans to a large pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Simmer for 1–1.5 hours until tender. Drain and set aside.

Step 2

Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).

Step 3

Sauté aromatics:

In the same pan, add the onion, and garlic. Sauté until softened and fragrant, about 3–4 minutes.

Step 4

Make the Tomato base:

  • In a bowl, whisk together tomato paste, cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and paprika until smooth.

Step 5

Combine the sauce:

  • Mix the Tomato base with molasses, mustard, Uncle Jammy’s BBQ Sauce, Gold Dust Seasoning, and chicken broth.

Step 6

Combine ingredients:

  • Add the beans, sauce mixture, and sautéed aromatics to the pot. Stir well to combine. Add cooked bacon back in (if using).

Step 7

Bake:

  • Cover the pot and bake in the preheated oven for 1.5–2 hours, stirring occasionally. Add more broth if the beans start to look dry.

Step 8

Finish and serve:

  • Remove the lid for the last 30 minutes of baking to let the sauce thicken. Taste and adjust salt or seasoning as needed.

  • Serve hot with cornbread, ribs, or grilled meats!
